Sir Patrick Stewart reads Shakespeare's Sonnets
“When I was a child in the 1940s, my mother would cut up slices of fruit for me (there wasn’t much),” wrote Stewart in his March 22 post. “And as she put it in front of me she would say: ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ How about, ‘A sonnet a day keeps the doctor away’?”

Take Care of Our World
Like puzzles? Challenge yourself with a game that helps scientists develop antiviral drugs to combat COVID-19. Foldit asks players to solve 3D puzzles that simulate how a chain of amino acids folds into a protein. Determining the most likely shape of a protein helps scientists develop drugs that can block it from doing harm. You can also add your home computer to a network that creates a virtual supercomputer that works on protein simulations. From edf.org.
Corals are threatened by climate change and pollution. To preserve them, we need to know their location. In NASA’s NeMO-Net video game, players of all ages identify and categorize reefs from 3D ocean imagery and help train a supercomputer to create a global map. From edf.org.
Help protect the scientific record from assault by climate change deniers. Join citizen archivists who copy climate data from government websites and save it on independent servers. The effort to back up government data gained traction after Donald Trump’s election. Datasets preserved so far include studies by the Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA, among others. This requires some technical skill, but the website offers instruction. From edf.org.
Under threat globally, penguins aren’t just cute but also important for detecting risks to critical ecosystems. In the popular Penguin Watch project, volunteers of all ages can help protect penguins by counting them in aerial photos of remote regions. From edf.org.

*Note re: COVID-19. In these trying times, we can agree that the power of gardens is all the more important and relevant. From the psychological benefits of connecting with the natural world, to the health benefits that stem from direct contact with a rich soil microbiome, we all understand that gardens are places of healing and wellness. It is our hope that gardens will continue to provide moments of joy and opportunities for reflection. We do hope that, in the absence of opportunities for traditional gatherings, our garden will provide opportunities for healthy enjoyment in the outdoors.
In accordance with current recommendation, no masks are required in the garden. However masks are suggested in close encounters, such as in the bathrooms, or for your comfort.*
